Dancing Queens

The smiles have an unmistakable sunshine quality, the wigs are shamelessly synthetic and the costumes for the finale look as if they've been sponsored by Bacofoil.

Where else could we be but in the Abba universe of wholesome naffness and sequinned flares, which stormed to triumph in the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest and still inspires individuals from seven to 70 to get down on the dance floor and discover their inner Swede.

Sing-a-Long-a Abba pretends to be no more than a huge group karaoke session - where the performers stir up the crowd with an energy that is undaunted as the audience nervously tremors its way though the opening number.

Unlike Mamma Mia!, this sing-along version wastes no time with a plot - but reserves its theatricality for the fun bag that every audience member is handed, filled with flags, party poppers, flashing lights and other similar props to keep arms waving and hips swinging for numbers ranging from Waterloo to that old stalwart, Dancing Queen.

The lookalike band members - Amanda Bell, Roy Jackson, Michael Palmer and Katie Roddy - combine cheesy sexiness with deliberately excruciating one-liners as they give instructions on what to do with the bags. Asking everyone to aim their party poppers at the stage during Thank You for the Music, the auditorium is told: "On the first Thank You, ladies, we're all going to pop together." Ever had an invitation like that before?

However, as the audience members' hands fly up to signal SOS, or wave wodges of fake Euro money, it is obvious that the producers know what they are doing. Unlike the producers of the abysmal 2001 Beatles compilation show All You Need is Love, which reduced the songs to synthetic vapidity, Singalong Productions (also responsible for Sing-a-Long Sound of Music) knows it is enough to get the original score going and leave the rest to people's desire to party.

And that is exactly what the audience did. The indications so far are that this is unlikely to be Singalong Productions' Waterloo.
