Consummate storyteller tells it like it is

Reginal D Hunter: Smooth and outspoken

Oh yes, Reg D Hunter is smooth. Like a freshly oiled-up baby's bottom. And if you think that's a dodgy image, then wait until you hear some of the visuals that Hunter conjures up. At one point, he quizzes the audience on whether we've seen our own arsehole.

It's base but funny. He uses the question to make a sociological point – a trick he's been touting on the road for quite a while now.

A consummate storyteller, Hunter's anecdotes are littered with humour and brains: slavery, Christian fundamentalists, racism, mums and, of course, ladyfriends are all in the mix.

This is a man who always has something to say and demands his right to say whatever it is – including his own bigotries – without consequence. That's hardly possible but Hunter’s firm belief in himself means he tries to wangle it anyway.

Hunter is candid to the point of brutal honesty about his own experiences, which he then uses to rail against systems and prejudices. But the result feels like so much science and not enough art.
