Camp entertainer on cruise control

The Icons In London opens like a second-rate cruise cabaret. With three sequin-clad girls and our entertainer for the evening, American impressionist Greg London (pictured) in a glittery pink jacket, this showcase of vocal warblings gets off to a palpably cheesy start.

From here, London leads us through the mostly uninteresting story of his life, from a young boy struggling 'to find his own sound' to his big break in Las Vegas. Threaded through this is a vastly unimpressive array of impersonations. Racing through Rod Stewart, David Cassidy, Elvis Presley, Tom Jones and even Tina Turner, the evening runs like a tribute to the oldies, occasionally dipping into insult as he butchers yet another Johnny Cash classic.

His dolled-up backing singers provide some bearable moments, with their cutely choreographed dances and teeny-tiny outfits. But the whole show rings of an over-rehearsed, self-conscious vanity project and if it wasn't for the fleeting moments of West End quality, London would be more akin to a working man's club performer circa 1985. Despite all this, there remains something endearing about his style of entertainment: so utterly holiday camp, so wincingly dependent on audience response, that you're battered into submission, shamelessly clapping along to Robert Palmer's Addicted To Love - out of sheer pity.
