Brokered dreams

Priceless performances from Larry Lamb and Warren Mitchell underwrite Sean Holmes's fascinating production of Arthur Miller's 1968 play. Otherwise, it's an oddly unsatisfying tale of two New York brothers - one who made good and one who got left behind.

Larry Lamb is Victor, who sold out his dreams to care for his father, bankrupted in the crash of 1929. Des McAleer is Walter, who abandoned his father to become a wealthy and complacent surgeon. Warren Mitchell is the ancient Jewish antiques dealer who brokers between the brothers over the contents of their family home, 16 years after the father's death.

Mitchell is an absolute hoot, carrying a hard-boiled egg in his briefcase and exercising a sales technique which is more complicated than the Old Testament. Walter, in what is essentially a party-pooping role, has no time for the old dealer, but McAleer ensures he's not as smug as he looks in his cashmere coat.

Sian Thomas is marginalised by the play as Victor's chivvying wife, but Lamb takes the biscuit, rising to a crescendo of suffocated rage as he gives an acting masterclass in wounded pride.
