Bloodlines and male pregnancy

The hitherto excellent Gecko Theatre Company have the gushing enthusiasm of new fathers in The Race. Yet this rumination on the significance of bloodlines and the need to keep on keeping on for the good of the future is too wrapped up in itself for its own good.

Viewed from the perspective of an expectant Dad - a pregnant man, that's the twist - the Gecko crew hurtle through set pieces aimed at contrasting the soulless paranoia and hustle of modern life with our spiritual stake in the future. But for a show that's so dependent on slick physicality, Gecko aren't very sharp movers.

There are some saving graces, most notably Amit Lahav's lead turn as the perplexed parent-to-be and a soundtrack that neatly mixes Creedence Clearwater Revival, Nicola Piovani's Dear Diary soundtrack and Nina Simone.

But the fact that I spent half the show trying to remember who Gecko co-director Al Nedjari played in Coronation Street tells its own story. I'll spoil it for you: he was Samir, Deirdre's Moroccan toyboy.
