Billy Elliot, Cuban-style

There are few ballet dancers, in fact I can't think of any, who have performed at the Opera House, Sadler's Wells and the Coliseum all in the same summer. These are big theatres, with savvy audiences, yet Acosta has wowed all three with, respectively, the Royal Ballet, then his own mixed ballet programme, and now his semi-autobiographical salsa show, which he directs and choreographs as wells as leads.

Named after the Cuban national bird, Tocororo is based on Acosta's own rise from the wrong side of the Havana tracks to critical ballet glory. It's essentially a coming-of-age/rite-of-passage show, a sort of Billy Elliot with salsa that taps the popularity of all things Latin and the considerable charms of Acosta himself.

Since its first performances at Sadler's Wells in 2003, and a return visit in 2004, Tocororo has been tweaked to good effect. Some scenes are tighter, and some of the dance routines are sharper. However-it's still 90 minutes straight through, with a tidy band, atmospheric sets and Acosta letting his dancers shine, as well as dazzling himself.

The men in this year's cast are especially strong, with one or two almost the match of our main man. As good as ever is Alexander Varona as Acosta's rival The Moor, and Lyvan Verdecia is extraordinarily assured as the boy Acosta. How does Cuba produce so much ballet talent?

Tocororo is not new and it's not perfect. But it's worth seeing for Acosta. He is a dance star.
