But Christof Loy's production - though generally workable and nothing like the nadir that was Aida - feels woolly and tired. Although firmly set in fascist Germany (yawn), some of Herbert Murauer's costumes seem to suggest a different era for no good reason.
The violent conflicts between the tenor and baritone aren't played out very convincingly, and the chorus too often doesn't seem sure what to do. Thank goodness for the exceptional music. Warwick Thompson
