An age of innocence

Belfast 1970. Just before rubber bullets and Bloody Sunday, when The Troubles as we know them today were starting up. Two young fellas, Mojo and Mickybo, with no sense yet of any sectarian divide, form a friendship around their shared passion for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

In their little hut they act out childish dreams and tell tall, misunderstood tales of their parents and the erupting city in which they live.

This big-hearted play in a garrulous Belfast brogue is by Owen McCafferty, whose latest work, Scenes From The Big Picture, is currently running at the National Theatre. This one is a story that weaves fantasy and reality as grown men recall their childhood. Theirs is a doomed, but romantically rose-tinted perspective, much like the myth of Butch and Sundance itself.

Produced by Belfast's Kabosh Theatre and first seen in 1998, the show is itself coming to the end of the road, making this the last chance to see Fergal McElherron and Michael Condron as the two lads in a highenergy physical performance reminiscent of Stones In Their Pockets.

Wearing only tight tops and combat trousers, they bring the whole of Belfast to life for 60 minutes of boisterous nostalgia, before their memories vanish forever, leaving not a craic behind. Patrick Marmion
