A dead good show

Only one thing is certain about a People Show theatre production: it will confound your expectations. No.114, The Obituary Show, is a look at death in terms of what a life is worth - from the viewpoint of an obituary writer.

A piano player drops dead during a rhythm'n'blues gig he agreed to do at the last minute. No one knows who he is or any details about his life. When news of his death arrives in the obituary office of a publication, it throws a spanner in the factory-line running of the section. Should anyone be interested in this man's life? And, if so, how much space is it worth?

The callous, JD-swilling writer Brierley (Gareth Brierley) initially takes on the task of producing an obit as a bet. But soon he finds himself obsessed. Meanwhile, there are increasingly bizarre goings-on on stage as a model ocean liner/gig prop turns into a coffin, filing cabinet drawers reveal an autopsy slab and a cafè counter, and a forensics team carry out a dance routine.

The seven actors play multiple characters and move between simultaneous scenes. Recorded material and shots from overhead cameras feed into the piece. It's a dizzying theatrical display - maybe rather too enamoured of its props and zany touches at the expense of the story. Nevertheless, there are sharp touches of black humour, some excellent performances, and, most importantly, a great deal of compassion.
