Snap up an Emin or Hirst with postcard lottery

It's the biggest annual bargain in Britart: the opportunity to buy a work by Damien Hirst or Tracey Emin for just £35.

Today, the Royal College of Art unveiled the identity of the artists in its 13th secret postcard sale from which the public can purchase a one-off, limited edition artwork by famous names.

Apart from Hirst and Emin, this year's contributors include artists Paula Rego, Quentin Blake and Olafur Eliasson, designers Sir Paul Smith, Julien Macdonald and Manolo Blahnik, film director Terry Gilliam and musicians Graham Coxon (ex-Blur) and John Squire (ex-Stone Roses).

The stars' sketches, watercolours and prints are combined with efforts from RCA students and each artist is given up to six cards to design. The college does not disclose who is responsible for which work so the identity of your chosen artist remains a secret until after you have completed the purchase and his or her signature is revealed on the back.

So one of the pictures of a man catching a ball, three birds in the snow, a green "sun" rising over a rainbow pattern or the sketch of a woman could be by a famous name or by a design student. The cards will be displayed for a week from tomorrow before being sold.

This year, the college in Kensington Gore is attempting to control the queues for the sale by holding a raffle for the first 50 places, with a ticket costing £1. Last year, more than 1,000 artists, designers and famous names donated more than 2,000 postcards.

The images included a pen drawing of a flying dove with a skull by Hirst, a female nude picture by Julian Opie and a colour drawing of a monument for the Trafalgar Square plinth by Grayson Perry.

Proceeds from the sale go to the college's Fine Art Student Awards Fund, which helps support emerging artists during their time at the college. To date, the postcard sales have raised more than £650,000.

Postcards will be displayed from tomorrow until 24 November followed by sale days on 25 and 26 November. They can also be viewed on the college's website from tomorrow.
