See and hear the poetry of accidents

Anri Sala is the leading European video artist of his generation. Over the past decade, hardly a biennial, art fair or appropriate group show has passed without including work by this intriguing 34-year-old Albanian. Sala's films are concise, often well-edited and usually music-related. They are based on a poetry of accidents - the chance encounter of odd phenomena which produces a moment of beauty.

He has made more exciting and accessible work than those exhibited at Hauser & Wirth - he once filmed a free jazz saxophonist improvising while apparently "floating" around modernist apartment blocks - but the installation in the main room is still inventive and impressive.

On one wall is a projection of a film Sala made in Arizona, while driving in circles around parked-up enormous American trucks. We hear his car radio which picks up, alternately, baroque music and a country song because the large truck-trailers block out one or other of the transmissions. This is Sala's accident: the combination of two different radio stations, determined by parked lorries, creates a new piece of music.

On its own this would be a terribly arcane artwork, but luckily it's just a doodle for the projection on the opposite wall, in which a group of musicians faithfully reconstruct exactly the same Arizona soundtrack as a precise composition, in a work which owes a huge debt to John Cage. For fans of the bizarrely brainy, this is heaven!

Yet Sala's work can be hit and miss. My advice is: don't go into the basement. There you will find a drum kit and a set of headphones on which the listener can hear different motifs from Franz Ferdinand's next single. We are invited to use the kit to record our own version of the song on a CD recorder. Sometimes, in conceptual art, the dreariest idea is mistaken for conceptual rigour.
