The Capri created a stir when he took it to the opening of Tate Modern. He said: "The Queen was there and there was quite high security.
"The police had two pigeon-holes for people like me - one was disgruntled artist, the other was terrorist. They didn't quite know which one I was, so they escorted me away from the building."
Shawcross himself came to prominence when his artwork The Nervous Systems was bought by Saatchi in 2003 for £26,000. He is also collected by fashion designer Alexander McQueen.
The theft has been reported to Clapton police. "They don't have any leads or anything but they are pretty stretched," said Shawcross. "I have tried ringing round the scrapyards pretending to be looking for Capri parts but haven't found anything."
