Virtually famous: Zara Larsson

We used to act all superior over the music tastes of mainland Europe. Right now, however, we’re proving very slow to realise the appeal of their biggest hits.

Lukas Graham has reached the highest echelons of our singles chart today, having been a multi-platinum star in his native Denmark since 2012.

Now Stockholm’s Zara Larsson is following him with Lush Life, sitting at number 19 and on the rise, but already a massive number one in her homeland and a top five hit in countries including Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands. It’s a swaggering, summery slice of electropop, full of handclaps and whistling.

At just 18, Larsson turns out to be an old hand at all this. A duet with London producer MNEK, Never Forget You, was a hit in last autumn, and she won Sweden’s version of Britain’s Got Talent as a 10-year-old.

Look out for her victorious version of Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On on YouTube – rather less cool than her current sound but an early demonstration of a voice that can do great things.
