Virtually famous: Toby Randall

DJ Khaled finally has something to shout besides his own name on Landslide, the debut single from Toby Randall. “I introduce you to young Toby, young greatness, UK London massive blessup!” yells the larger-than-life producer at the start of the song.

Young Toby, 16, is actually from the UK Northampton massive, but never mind. He’s made a mighty impressive leap from cutesy internet star – posting cover versions to Vine and YouTube since 2013, interviewed on CBBC’s Newsround in his bedroom in 2015 – to becoming the latest signing to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label.

Khaled, who featured pretty much every giant of hip hop and R&B on his latest album (Beyoncé, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Drake and the boss, Jay-Z, all popped up) clearly thinks he’s found someone special over here.

Pale and skinny, Randall looks more like he should be focusing on the transition to big school, but when he opens his mouth to sing 20 seconds in, everything becomes clear. Those are some pipes on the little lad.

He’s got some work to do to make his original material match up to the popularity of his long-running covers business – his quick version of Sam Smith’s new number one, Too Good at Goodbyes, has overtaken his single’s YouTube views count in just a week – but he definitely has enough talent to make many more people shout his name.
