This summer's top three LBGT events

With Worldpride 2012 coming to London -- one of the most creative and entertaining gay communities in the world -- there's loads of ways to celebrate sexuality this summer. Here are just three...

1. Lovebox

The 10th Out and Out Fierce Sunday at Lovebox will be brimming full of muscle marys in chaps, lesbians in uncharacteristically impractical get-up and transvestites of the highest order (see: Jonny Woo). The disco-house-techno line-up is unrivalled in its genius - the Diamond Jubilee's most exciting performer, Grace Jones, will headline alongside the equally legendary Chaka Khan and the enduringly brilliant Chic ft Nile Rodgers. Less seasoned, equally alluring performers include Ronika, Azari and iii and The Rapture. Calling this a party is like saying Waterloo was a "little tiff".

2. Antony's Meltdown

Curated by Antony Hegarty, the Future Feminism festival will stretch over 22 events, including gigs from Lou Reed and performance art and films from around the world. Sex and the City's Kim Cattrall will be giving a a talk too. One real highlight will be Planningtorock who, playing the Queen Elizabeth Hall, will be in an environment worthy of the intense theatricality of her violin-laden songs from her critically acclaimed 2011 album, W. Antony's Meltdown is perhaps a more subdued, spiritual counterweight to the gaudy, saccharine camp of Worldpride, but that's not to question its spectacle.

3. London Worldpride 2012

This event will host art, music and live theatre over two weeks. On parade day Trafalgar Square will host good clean pop performances for families and tourists while Soho teems with unofficial street parties. Expect to see twinks in go-go shorts jostling for room next to platform-wobbling trannies, and lesbians of all ilks chugging WKDs to clubs blasting out The Wanted. Avoid the crush of Old Compton Street and the queue into Soho Square by visiting the various street parties dotted about, and if you’re looking to take it on to the early hours, you’d do well to get to Duckie’s Gay Shame & Lesbian Weakness Ceremony, held at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern. Alternatively head east to any of Dalston’s gay dives on ‘the Strip’. Failing that, the Joiners Arms on Hackney Road will have reopened by then!
