Canadian singer-songwriter Taylor Janzen got her break at her local music festival, the Winnipeg Folk Fest, through a mentoring programme for young musicians. Such opportunities to be visible to a live audience are on hold for the time being so, like so many others, the 20-year-old has been performing at home.
Earlier this month she was part of Sofa Sets, a three-hour mini-festival also featuring Aurora, Hamilton Leithauser and Jade Bird. It was a throwback to her time putting home-made covers online; a version of Paramore’s Fake Happy earned praise from the band’s Hayley Williams in early 2018.
An early EP of charming solo guitar songs, Interpersonal, has been superseded by a fuller, poppier sound, but her most recent single, I Feel a Darkness, is a late night slowie that suits these stuck-home days.
Come the next festival season, whenever that may be, she’s well worth seeking out.
