After a couple of “headphone” albums of insular psychedelic tunes with titles like Solitiude Is Bliss, Australian visionary Kevin Parker had a change of heart. He realised he’d never heard any Tame Impala tunes played near a dancefloor. Then he took mushrooms in LA, the Bee Gees came on the radio and everything fell into place. The opening track, Let It Happen, is a remarkably faithful replication of his psyclobin-inspired epiphany; it’s eight minutes of pulsating, mutating, melancholy bliss with a cocoon of a chorus. The basslines are exemplary throughout – but what impresses most is the range. ‘Cause I’m a Man is like the soundtrack to some lysergic porn movie; The Moment comes on like a druggy Michael Jackson; Yes I’m Changing is a lost David Lynch soundtrack. Transcendental pop of the highest order.
