Macklemore - Gemini, review

Following the huge success of their debut album, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis overreached themselves on last year’s comeback.

In particular, the nine-minute track tackling white supremacists and police brutality didn’t have quite the appeal of fun hit Thrift Shop from 2012.

While guest star Lil Yachty does send an expletive in Donald Trump’s direction during the rinky-tink groove of Marmalade, Macklemore’s solo record generally avoids politics in favour of radio-friendly songs designed to restore the rapper’s chart trajectory.

As well as lightweight pop duets with Kesha and Skylar Grey, there’s trite introspection on reggae-tinged shocker Intentions.

He’s at his best on the playful hip-hop of Willy Wonka, Corner Store and Firebreather, a rare rap-rock tune with attitude.

Gemini should revive Macklemore’s fortunes, unless Eminem returns to steal his thunder.
