When a songwriter takes only nine months between albums, it usually means you’re paying for the previous record’s rejects — songs that might once have ended up as B-sides.
That’s not the case with James Vincent McMorrow, an Irish singer with a soulful side. True Care is an ambitious, 15-track album accompanied by a 1,300-word statement about his “vision”. He’s already been playing it in full on tour.
While his self-belief is to be admired, this sprawling collection isn’t as satisfying as last year’s We Move. In his haste to make more music, the lyrics sometimes seem to be whatever is on McMorrow’s mind (Holding On includes the revelation that he’s not too keen on pomegranates).
But the fervent vocal, warm electronic textures and abundance of ideas will make you forgive the self-indulgent moments.
