Five songs to hear this week (May 13-19)

The first Stone Roses single in over 20 years arrived last night, and nothing’s changed. All For One is an arm-waving unity anthem and a sonic time capsule with its baggy beats, Ian Brown’s breathless vocal and a mighty John Squire guitar solo.

Tim Burton’s Alice Through the Looking Glass film isn’t getting great reviews, but at least it’s an excuse for a new Pink single. Her latest shouty anthem, Just Like Fire, is on the soundtrack and has its own video on YouTube.

Having worked on Beyoncé’s new album, James Blake has now done a Beyoncé and released his third album, The Colour in Anything, all of a sudden last weekend. It’s more gorgeous, late night future soul, including the single, the Bon Iver-featuring I Need a Forest Fire, which is on YouTube now.

Meghan Trainor’s new album, Thank You, is on sale today. She was in the news this week for complaining about digital alterations to her video for Me Too, having previously criticised the dark art of Photoshop on her biggest hit, All About That Bass. The original video, complete with wider waist, is now online.

Overdue a genuine hit, big-voiced new pop singer Dua Lipa is big on the YouTube numbers in any case. The BBC Sound of 2016 nominee has scored around a million views for her latest single, Hotter Than Hell, in the past week.
