Britain's first museum of moving art has opened in the East End. Kinetica, at Old Spitalfields Market, showcases technological and electronic art.

Artistic director Dianne Harris said: "The UK has lagged behind the rest of the world until now. This new museum puts right a gap in our cultural offering. Other major capitals have such museums. Kinetic art is art that moves, that is living and alive. The museum will act as a record of the seminal moments of kinetic art."

Pieces include a robotic writing machine worth £10,000 that mimics Salvador Dali's signature and a series of robotic works depicting human evolution.

The £500,000 venture has been backed by £100,000 from the Arts Council, and Ballymore Properties, which led the restoration of the market.
