The ripostes are hilarious and the tale of an insurance man hypnotised into robbing his clients - then called in, unknowing, to try to find the culprits - is ingenious but who is Allen kidding? The first act of Fitzgerald's efficiency expert, even before she revamped the file system, would have been to lose the sexagenarian in the investigative department. Hunt is very, very good, deadpan and sexy but surely her character would be more likely to help Briggs across the road than fall for him. Briggs needs to be played by Allen circa 1975 and no amount of cinematic hypnosis can make that possible.
