Existentially empty Richard Gere takes up ballroom dancing to rediscover his joie de vivre.

Directed by Blackpool-born Peter Chelsom, this remake of the Japanese hit Shall We Dansu? has a Full Monty feel and supporting characters of the muesli variety (all fruits, nuts or flakes) plus JLo as an unlucky-in-love dance teacher.

It is a rom-com strangely lacking in rom, but Stanley Tucci's turn as a deranged ballroom fanatic goes some way to compensate.

A German film of two halves. In part one we meet an expat Turk waster - a cross between Oliver Reed and Michael Hutchence in looks and habits - making a highly dubious marriage of convenience with a pretty, fellow Turk. The convenience is all hers - designed to get her family off her back so she can carry on with a life of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll. But after the party, the hangover and a raunchy, funny and very enjoyable first half, the couple get serious and "issues" about culture and ethnicity arrive like guests who got the wrong day.

ARE WE THERE YET?

Once a baddass rapper, Ice Cube is now one of film's most reliable purveyors of feelgood - the Friday series and Barbershop, for example. But in this awkward family drama he's badly miscast as a child-hating bachelor reluctantly taking his girlfriend (Nia Long) and her kids to Vancouver in his SUV.

The unfunny jokes - mostly about what monsters the children are - will soon have you asking "Are we there yet?"

MOOG

No cert, 72 mins

Biog of Robert Moog (rhymes with vogue), the man who invented the first practical synthesiser and transformed modern music. Moog himself conducts interviews with Rick Wakeman, Bernie Worrall and others in the synth vanguard; and there's footage of Keith Emerson and various "musique concrète" pioneers. It's a touch arid and lacking beef.

SOLARIS

A new print of Andrei Tarkovsky's contemplative 1972 sci-fi (recently remade with George Clooney), is showing as part of a March-long season of his work at the NFT.

Tarkovsky believed cinema to be a branch of poetry, and the film's plot, about an astronaut who encounters his dead wife on a space station, gives Tarkovsky plenty of scope to analyse memory and the nature of reality. It's sci-fi, Jim, but not as we know it.
