Helen (Ingeborga Dapkunaite) is a harassed young Lithuanian mother-of-two at the end of her tether. Her husband, John (Peter Mullan), is a Scottish aid worker who spends more time in far-flung countries orchestrating emergency relief supplies than at home with his family. With Helen's birthday approaching, John attempts to travel home through dangerous territory in the Balkans, unaware that she has been killed in a car accident. Helen, also unaware of her condition, continues to wander the house, talking to her children through dreams and visions.
