Summer Storm

Tobi and Achim are the stars of a Bavarian boys rowing team. Achim fancies girl rower Sandra; Tobi fancies Achim.

Which is a bit of a bummer because homosexuals are a freakish novelty to the boys, one they confront when they're pitted against a gay rowing team - the Queerstrokes, no less - on a weeklong summer camp (geddit?).

"Can we be friends with them?" they ask in all seriousness.

Summer Stormhas a lovely, end-of-summer look but what could have been a tender, if clichéd, rites of passage arthouse flick is undermined by stabs at comedy set pieces (the gays running away from a herd of cows) and musical montages that seem pitched at the teen market.

As a result, it's hard to know who the film is aimed at, or who will want to watch it.
