Sidewalk talk with Ed

I based much of my dialogue on what women say to each other about men. Women talk about emotions, intimacies, past boyfriends, problems and fears. And one of their biggest complaints is that men never listen.

At the time, I was with Heather Graham, and would ask her 'Does your character make sense and do the other women make sense?' - but the film and our break-up were unconnected.

I play a television producer who is on the dating rounds. He has a one-night stand with Rosario Dawson, a school teacher. She is divorced from David Krumholtz. He's a doorman on the Upper East Side and he has a crush on Brittany Murphy, who plays a young student and waitress. She's having an affair with an older married man, a dentist played by Stanley Tucci, who is married to Heather Graham, a socialite type. She's a real estate agent who shows me an apartment. There's a hope of this romance developing at the end of the film between the two of us.

I have had no problem with fidelity myself, because I've always been in long-term relationships. But I think people suffer from the belief that the grass is always greener. When people are single, they're dying to be in a good relationship. When they're in that solid relationship, you hear about how envious they are of their single friends. We are all searching...and have trouble finding happy relationships. And it's probably more extreme in New York. Relationships are easier and faster than if you were living in small-town Iowa.
