Twenty years ago, Chariots of Fire increased Holly-wood's obsession with all things British. Where previously American stars had dominated, there was then more appetite for the new, the likes of Daniel Day-Lewis, Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman, Ralph Fiennes, Hugh Grant, Kristin Scott Thomas, Kate Winslet, Judi Dench (the list is endless). "Hollywood fell in love with England during the Swinging Sixties; in the Seventies, it had a grim image. Chariots regenerated an affection for Britishness," says Puttnam.
