Polanski was suitably encour-aging, but a film is the director's medium and his input in terms of what he wants to see, what he wants to shoot, is not just essential but obligatory. He decided that we should be ensconced in a house near Rambouillet, southwest of Paris, until the work was done. It was one of the most fruitful collaborations of my career. For six weeks we discussed, argued, acted out the scenes and laughed a lot. Laughter was, I suppose, our defence against the tragic events we were describing.
