WHITE NOISE

If you believe in EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon, a method of tracking and recording the voices of the dead via transmissions from everyday electronic devices), Geoffrey Sax's White Noise might be for you.

It has Michael Keaton as a husband whose wife has been murdered and who becomes obsessed with communicating with her. When he does, he thinks she is warning him of the psychopath who killed her.

Sax throws all but the kitchen sink at us in the way of noises off, blank screens through which shadows flit and the grey hostility of surroundings that generally betoken a horror movie.

Mostly, it works. This is by some way the creepiest movie around just now. Well played too by Keaton, Deborah Kara Ungar and Ian McNeice.

UNDEAD

Cert 15, 104 mins

Michael and Peter Spierig may one day become the Australian Coen brothers. But they have a very long way to go judging by this cheap and cheerful movie about zombies from outer space disturbing the peace of a rustic fishing community.

This is fairly dire, but engaging on the same level as an amateur pantomime. You can't believe they can get away with it. But somehow they manage through sheer enthusiasm.

END OF THE CENTURY: THE STORY OF THE RAMONES

Cert PG, 112 mins
The fate of superannuated rock stars was never more discursively discussed than in this documentary about the Ramones, who never really made it big except in Latin America, but are now credited with being one of the great influences on punk rock.

Hailing from the Bowery, they toured for 22 years, arguing all the while about the music they should be playing. I prefer the music to their talk.
