One wedding and a 'shiva'

If you liked My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Bend It Like Beckham, then this is the film for you.

Set in north London, Suzie Gold follows a young girl who struggles to establish herself outside the constrictions and traditions of her Jewish family.

While'st some serious messages about Jewish culture and traits are loosely portrayed, the film on a whole takes a lighthearted look at Jewish family conventions. Not surprising really when you learn that first time director Ric Cantor is himself a Jew.

Suzie (Summer Phoenix) falls in love with Darren (Leo Gregory), a non-Jewish boy she meets at work and secretly tries to balance her life between the wild free spirit she enjoys with him and the strict conformity to Jewish traditions expected of her from her family.

However, she soon discovers she cannot maintain the balance and through these pressures, coupled with the death of her grandmother, the young lovers split as Suzie is drawn closer to her family and an appreciation for her culture and traditions.

Of course, it doesn't all end there, as Suzie realises that despite opting for her family's 'safe' option of a boyfriend in Iddo Goldberg (Anthony Silver) - she still longs for Darren.

In between the deaths, grieving, affairs, and wedding, the film has many comical moments which will make audiences (Jewish and otherwise) laugh out loud. Although, being a Scottish groom only months away from marrying into a Jewish family, one can perhaps laugh more heartedly when references are made to how cups of tea and food are held in such high regard by Jewish families.

'Our fridge is always full,' said Iddo when comforting Suzie after her grandmother's death. Need I say anymore?

Producer Rebecca Green said she was fed up with all the boys' films in cinema and just wanted to make a film 'with girls, a bit colourful and a bit different'. And that, is what you get.
