No match for Them

You do not need to be a grammarian to avoid confusing Robert Harmon's They with Gordon Douglas's Them! - a taut 1954 sci-fi thriller about giant ants. They is a cheaply made ragbag of occult frights afflicting Julia (Laura Regan), a student working for her Masters in psychiatry, despite the midnight oil suffering a frequent power cut every time she imagines a childhood monster stalking her - usually unseen, but very noisily, as if the plumbing were in a permanent state of indigestion.

"They" are supposed to identify their victims in childhood with a lesion that suggests the HIV virus, then come back years later to claim them. This necessitates Julia stripping in front of her boyfriend so that he can give her a clean bill of health - though as she keeps on her bra and pants, she may be putting too much trust in the evil spirits' sense of propriety.

The film is made for crude souls: any higher rank of film buff will rightly deride its rip-off of the swimming-bath scene in Jacques Tourneur's Cat People.
