The film points up this social and cultural dilemma effectively, and the moment when her friend Charlotte (Claudie Blakley) tells Elizabeth just why she needs to accept Mr Collins's offer of marriage is one of the strongest in the film.
It is not the gentlest version of Pride and Prejudice imaginable. It is one which tries hard to give us a sense of the time in which it was written. There are many ways to put Austen on the screen and this, despite flaws, provides some substantial entertainment and a useful counterweight to the pretty-pretty idea of the author's work.
