Luke is one of the comeback kids

Back in the Eighties, Matt and Luke Goss - as pop band Bros - whipped young girls into a frenzy with their anthem When Will I Be Famous?. They did, of course, become very famous indeed. "It was five years of craziness," says Luke. Now, at 33, he's back enjoying a whole new craziness, Holly-wood-style. Last weekend, his new film, Blade II, opened at number one in the US box office chart with a staggering take of more than $33 million.

And though one might expect Goss to be smirking over anyone who sniggered when he announced he was becoming a film actor, he is doing nothing of the sort. Luke Goss the actor is an older, wiser fellow than Luke Goss the pop drummer who used to tie bottle tops to his Doc Martens.

He's not remotely bothered that Americans don't remember Bros - "Why should they? We didn't have success in America" - and can't quite believe his luck. "I'm like a kid in a candy store," he beams, his lingo testimony to the fact that he spends most of his time these days in LA. "I have a place in London still but I've only spent about two weeks there in the past year. I've been in Prague making Blade II, Paris, Miami..."

Blade II is his sixth film and by far and away the most successful. But the American film he made previously, Zig Zag, was the turning point. Starring alongside Wesley Snipes, Natasha Lyonne and Oliver Platt, Goss clearly made a big impression on Snipes, who had a large hand in casting him as Blade's nemesis, Nomak, in Blade 2.

Unsurprisingly, Goss says he was a "big fan" of Snipes even before they worked together. "Working with Wesley is such a buzz. I love that he likes what I do and that we get on." Film acting proved a natural transition after his post-Bros theatre work - notably playing Danny Zuko in Grease. As with Bros, he woke up one morning and realised he wanted a change. "After nearly 2,000 shows, I'd done enough to last me some time."

He now says he'd never do a musical film - though he'd have been tempted by something like Moulin Rouge. "You can poke me in the eye in a couple of years if I ever change my mind. I don't want to do music ever again. All my dreams were fulfilled."

But can he believe his luck at his second career success? "No. I have to keep pinching myself. I feel very fortunate. There's nothing like a bit of failure to sort the men from the boys."
