Looking to the Future

Going to the cinema has become a bit of a bore. At least, that's what Fabien Riggall, the founder and director of Future Shorts, thinks. Not content with bringing the best of the world's short films to a screen near you in the regular Future Shorts nights, Riggall has come up with something bigger: Future Cinema.

Tonight's event takes cinema out of the cinema and squeezes it into the dungeonesque confines of the seOne club beneath London Bridge station. There, the Future Cinema team will be screening roughly 100 of the best short films from the past year interspersed with performances from the likes of musico-comedians The Cellorhythmics, audio-visual shows from The Light Surgeons, pole dancers and plenty of burlesque (which is the new rock'n'roll, or something).

Highlights are everywhere, from seminal music videos like Michel Gondry's Daft Punk promo and Chris Cunningham's robotic take on Bjˆrk's All Is Full Of Love, to efforts from The Knife and Faithless. There are also classic shorts from the vaults such as Bu"uel and DalÌ's Un Chien Andalou and modern stunners like the Bafta-nominated City Paradise.

The event is part of the London Film Festival, so if you can't get a ticket for the closing night screening of George Clooney's new film on Thursday (and, of course, you can't), then this is as good a way as any to bid farewell to the festival for another year.
