Krumping out of trouble

If you are able to find a more energetic film over the New Year period, please tell me about it. David LaChapelle's documentary details the development of former members of street gangs, who decided that enough was enough and started to fashion dance movements - first clowning and then krumping - in South Central Los Angeles.

The phenomenon began, so LaChapelle says, after the Rodney King race riots in the Eighties and has effectively kept its participants away from police batons. The exuberance of the movement is stunning, rather like a mixture of African dance and hip-hop.

The film tries hard for a modicum of social and cultural relevance but that's where it's at its weakest. It's the dancing that counts - and it's remarkable.
