Jack's memorable ride

The National Film Theatre has managed to get hold of a fine new print of the director's own cut.

David Locke (Jack Nicholson) is a disillusioned journalist covering Africa, who discovers a dead colleague in his shabby Saharan desert hotel and decides to change identity with him.

Nicholson delivers a performance he has seldom bettered; Mark Peploe and Peter Wollen's spare but taut screenplay and Antonioni's feel for Locke's disenchantment as he returns to wander round Europe make this a film that's not easy to forget.

Its ending is one of the most memorable in all cinema.
