While studio bosses will keep an eye on the bottom line, film-goers can look forward to hot competition, lashings of old-fashioned star quality and a potential Oscar rush for Britain. The supporting actor category seems like a race already run, with the late Heath Ledger taking every critics' award going for The Dark Knight and sure to add an Oscar. But will the best men and women walk away with the big prizes?
BEST ACTOR
Three names are likely to dominate the field: Sean Penn, Mickey Rourke and Frank Langella. Penn, who won the Oscar in 2003 for Mystic River, gives perhaps his finest performance in Milk (not released in the UK until 23 January), as legendary San Francisco politician Harvey Milk who fought for gay rights until his assassination in 1978. Warm and charming in a way that he rarely is on screen, America's leading method actor captures the humour and endearing personality of Milk, while making his passionate campaign for civil rights utterly compelling.
