Her parents' marriage fractured when she was nine years old, so she and her younger brother, David, who still lives in Glasgow, were then brought up solely by their mother, Patsy. "She worked in an office in Glasgow to make ends meet," says Macdonald. "I don't ever really think that my dad left us, more that we left him, really. But it's funny now because I didn't do that well at school. I was always convinced that I'd never amount to much.
