Indeed, it's a great shame that Sommers couldn't confine himself to the Gothic, because when he and his production designer, Allan Cameron, stick to the style that has given us thousands of fine English parish churches (and a fair few vampire-movies), they come up trumps. The exteriors are fantastic, the castles mega-looming, and there's a beautiful - if fanciful - masqued ball which shows off to perfection the costumes contrived by Gabriella Pescucci.
