As Jamal sends the message down a fuzzy phone line from a London espresso bar to tell Ena's uncle, quite simply, that his son is no longer "in this life", Winterbottom cuts to the hawk-nosed old man in some nameless bazaar where the story started - and two worlds suddenly seem next door to each other. Jamal himself, says an end credit, made his way back to England again after the filming, perhaps using his experience as a dry run for his trip, and has since got a licence to stay - but only until he is 18. Small deal, you may think, for so big a journey.
