Griffith's taste of Honey

In Cecil B. DeMented I play Honey Whitlock, a Hollywood film star kidnapped by underground film-makers, a bunch of crazy terrorists who disagree with the system and want to destroy all the cineplexes and the big American movies. "Don't you feel you're playing yourself?" I was asked - but it was fun to spoof myself. Honey is such a bitch and a prima donna - hopefully I've never behaved that way.

When I played the film star in Woody Allen's Celebrity, I thought I was basing it on one of my friends. Then I realised, this character has her own production company, and I have my own production company. The character's husband is directing her in a movie, and my husband has just directed me in a movie. I think it was more real than I wanted.

I play another woman who becomes a sitcom star in Crazy In Alabama, the film I did for Antonio. It's been said that I'm playing actresses a lot lately. I grew up a product of Hollywood? I don't know if it's that. But nothing I do is premeditated, or calculated. I'm looking for work like any actor, and it doesn't get easier for a woman over 40.

The old Hollywood rules about age are still rampant. It's interesting to be 43 and see it. I guess that's why I'm doing more independent film recently. I am serious about my career. I want to be one of those old lady actresses - to be working until the day I die. And independent films are more inclined to take risks, to break the barriers. That's what Cecil B. DeMented is about. John Waters makes films with a message ? to be open-minded when you go to the movies.
