Michael Ballhaus's photography conjures with the images of mangled death that turn the snow into red mush as the men hack, lop, skewer and dismember until the locals' leader, the one-eyed devil with a mammoth moustache, named Bill "The Butcher" Cutting (Daniel Day-Lewis), hews his way to the micks' champion, "Priest" Vallon (Liam Neeson), and opens the throat above his cleric's collar. Vallon dies in front of his infant son. Overture over: let the curse of a slain father, "The blood stays on the blade", begin to work its feudal course.
