The story is encompassed in less than 90 mins and has no real ending, rather like relationships. Although The Squid and the Whale concentrates on the sort of liberal middle-class people who need a good slap to help them sort their lucky selves out, its detail, right from the fraught opening tennis match between the couple and their children, is often deadly in its accuracy.
The performances are excellent and good, crisp writing is the key; there aren't many American films around right now with such an effective combination.
