  • German cinema isn't exactly top of the pops over here, an injustice the Fifth German Film Festival, at the Curzon Soho (93-107 Shaftesbury Avenue W1. Tel: 020 7734 2255) until Thursday, aims to rectify.

One film, Sophiiiie!, goes on release; showing Sunday at 9pm and Thursday at 5pm, it's the tale of a pregnant young woman (Katharina Schuttler) spending a night in full self-destruct mode. Schuttler, veering between infuriating provocation and drunken despair, makes the film: forced to take her as she is, the viewer gradually gets drawn into her predicament.

Other films range from relationship drama I'm The Father (tonight 9pm) to caper movie 12 Past Midnight (Tue 7pm); there are also documentaries, talks and a focus on Christian Petzold, including his latest film, Something To Remind Me (Saturday 9pm, Tue 3pm).
