Far too much of a good thing

So many new films are miles too long for their content, and here's another one. Yet Christian Volckman's black-and-white animated thriller, about the kidnapping of a brilliant young researcher in a dystopian Paris of 2054, has justly won awards for its daring and imagination.

Real-life actors supply movements and expressions that are then translated by computers into the animated figures we see on the screen.

But it's a technique which, however well deployed, quickly palls and a labyrinthine plot that's increasingly difficult to follow.

Daniel Craig, Romola Garai and Jonathan Pryce are the leading players, doing rather more than simply voice their parts.
