A Marvel’s greatest hits package (Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow etc) that thanks to Buffy svengali Joss Whedon’s direction and laconic script hands all the best lines and coolest scenes to Robert Downey Jr, making it more like Iron Man 3 plus support acts.

(Momentum, cert 15, DVD)

Two stories exploring the dark side of love. In one a mum (Vanessa Paradis) struggles to bring up her child who has Down’s syndrome; in the other a superstar DJ starts a new life with a new-model wife. They don’t really connect but this strange mood-board of a film, heady with music, is powerful all the same.

Naturalism meets allegory in this dreamy debut by Alice Rohrwacher — clearly one to watch — charting a 13-year-old girl’s coming of age in Catholic Calabria.

(Paramount, cert 15, DVD)

The ship has already sailed on the tiny indie drama with a fuzzy emotional centre, but Ed Helms and Jason Segel make a good go of it as a pair of useless brothers arguing all the way towards an unexpected finale. Wee, but nice.

(Fox, cert 12, Blu-ray)

If you have the kit, strap on the glasses for James Cameron’s $18 million retro-fit of 3D on to the biggest film of all time (until his Avatar took the title) as Kate, Leo and a doomed ship all head for an almost believably solid iceberg.

Elizabeth Olsen, the talented sister of the famous twins, does what’s necessary in this bog-standard haunted-house horror with a bravura high concept — it’s all done in a single take.
