Struggling widower Matt Damon buys a rundown zoo and inherits Scarlett Johansson (trying yet failing to look like a muck-shovelling zookeeper). Fluffy romance plus ickle animals — that’s Sunday evening taken care of.

Mozart’s Sister

(Palisades Tartan, cert 12, DVD)

Sensibly ignoring the fact of Mozart’s genius, this elegant French drama focuses on his sister and how her own musical talents were thwarted by patriarchy. The 1760s period detail wrestles with right-on 1980s indignation and just about comes out on top.

Contraband

(Universal, cert 15, Blu-ray/DVD)

A twisty caper movie set on a ship, with Mark Wahlberg as the ace smuggler doing “one last job”. Like Reykjavik-Rotterdam, the Icelandic original, Contraband is almost but not quite a really decent thriller.

(Revolver, cert 15, DVD)

A real mixed bag, this drama about poor North African Muslim women going on a love strike is brilliantly cast, epicly constructed and fabulous-looking but it bangs the drum for progress so insistently that you start to empathise with their brutal, stupid menfolk.

Mitsuko Delivers

(Third Window, cert 12, DVD)

A refreshing anti-materialist Japanese drama about a naïve pregnant girl’s progress in a world obsessed with “cool”. Cute, coy, wilfully quirky or possibly just extremely irritating.

Casino Jack

(Signature, cert 15, Blu-ray/DVD)

Kevin Spacey (right) as a slick lobbyist with a phone in one hand and dumb-bell in the other, in a political satire that bravely waited for Bush to leave office before having a go. The script is buttock-clenchingly bad too, but it does score a few hits.

The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie

(StudioCanal, cert 15, Blu-ray/DVD)

Time has rendered inert much of Luis Buñuel’s surreal satire about six middle-class people trying (and failing) to sit down to dinner — the bourgeois high sacrament. This 40th-anniversary remaster oddly makes the 1972 Oscar-winner look even more dated.
