Dark corners where Others go...

I play Grace, a mother of two, in The Others which I would describe as a supernatural suspense drama. It was made in English in Spain for director Alejandro Amenábar - but as learning languages is my hobby, I would have liked to have made it in Spanish.

The story is set in the last days of the Second World War on the island of Jersey, but it was filmed in an old English-style manor in Cantabrie, a city on the misty Atlantic coast of Spain. Grace is waiting in their remote family home for her adored husband (played by Christopher Eccleston) to return from the war. Her whole life is about stoically bringing up her children alone in troubled times.

When she takes on new servants (play by Erick Sykes, Elaine Cassidy and Fionnula Flanagan) to replace three who have disappeared, the long dark corridors become stalked by other presences. It is that fear of the dark, fear of the creaking door, fear of the shifting shadow - all those childhood things we sometimes never grow out of - that haunts this film.

Grace gradually finds that ther children) played by Alakina Mann and James Bentley) are doing unexplained things and she is reluctant to believe them when they say they are communicating with others, people she doesn't know and cannot see. She is an extrememly devout Christian and won't tolerate the ideal of ghosts. But her eyes tell it all.

I found myself fascinated and enchanted with Grace's story. I've never done any supernatural films before and I think Alejandro, who wrote the story, has an incredible ability to build suspense from the inside rather than the outside. He's not afraid to go to the darkest places. I am.
