It lacks, however, the human heart that beat within Bill Paxton's similarly genre-toying Frailty last year and winds up closer to the psychoshock absurdities of Richard Rush's lurid Color of Night. Mangold may be slumming it, but with a cast that includes John Cusack, Ray Liotta, Alfred Molina, Amanda Peet and Jake Busey, he is slumming it with the best. Ultimately, this is the film equivalent of the $41 Kobe beefburger: it looks great, it tastes great, but when all's said and done it's still a beefburger.
