Classic shows no sign of flagging

The audience bayed in approval of the cabbie's bloody attempts to clean the streets of human scum. But the film, now reissued, in no way tries to redeem its central character.

It is both an ironic and multi-layered picture of urban discontents, incorporating a superb leading performance, a magnificent last score from Bernard Herrmann, who died a day after its completion, and a savage portrait of Seventies New York that is exactly the opposite of Woody Allen's.

Cybill Shepherd, as a presidential campaign aide, the young Jodie Foster as a 12-year-old runaway turned prostitute, and Harvey Keitel as her ponce make up a memorable cast.
